Choosing a Penance for Lent

During Lent, the Church urges us to do penance, but which penances are best for our souls?  In this Ash Wednesday sermon of 1998, Bishop Kelly explains that the most useful penances are  those which mortify the heart and turn our thoughts and desires from earthly treasures to heavenly ones.  After reminding us that penance is valueless, unless it is done with the right intention and for the proper motive, the Bishop gives helpful suggestions on the practice of mortification.  This sermon is an indisputable assistance in preparing for the holy season of Lent.
